Odlaw — Car Door

Odlaw are back with ‘Car Door,’ out on Blue Grey Pink. The tune begins with solo guitar and vocal, adding subtle synth embellishments, and finally breaks into a down tempo, expansive band feature to bring it home. The melancholic vocal performance adds a certain seriousness to this love song, it’s weighted just right.

‘Car Door’ is in the RTRFm Sound Selection for the week of April 15th, 2024.

Kompromat — end node estimation

Kompromat release end node estimation on Burnt Seed Records. Two 30-plus-minute tracks that generate a heavy, swirling, breathing, dense atmosphere. The anguished, layered vocals of Sage Pbbbt sitting in a complex fog of synthesised sound from Lesley Kaye and Stewbags.

Bribes — BRIBES

Bribes self-title debut album is out now. I love the spirit of this band, unfazed or overwhelmed by the process and really focused on playing together and recording new work. There’s no superfluous moments or instrumentation on this album, and the songwriting feels very classic in the best way.

Lend your ear March 8th, at The Seasonal Brewing Company for the album launch.

Bribes is the RTRFM Local Feature Release for the week of March 11th, 2024.

Recorded and mixed by Will Hooper
Mastered by Dan O'Connor at ENCODER Sound.

Thomas MacGregor — Juvenilia

Today Thomas MacGregor (aka Thom from Turtle Bay) releases the Juvenilia EP on Pink House Records.

It’s words for and from the everyperson, commenting on the world at large, from a knowingly subjective perspective. Musically it reaches for country-folk-rock, with the vocal and guitar playing sitting beautifully front and centre. It feels like such complete songwriting, touching a country twang, but keeping it just mid-fi enough for a bit of character.

‘America’ off Juvenilia is in the RTRFM Sound Selection for the week starting March 18th, 2024.

Recorded by Will Johnson and Thomas MacGregor
Mixed by Jeremy Segal
Mastered by Dan O'Connor at ENCODER Sound.

The Drowners — Dancing For A Dollar

The Drowners release ‘Dancing for a Dollar,’ their first single of 2024. I really enjoy the song writing here, and the band feels like it really plays together on this track, dialled in on hits in and out of section etc. An excellent followup to 2023’s ‘Biting Nails.’

‘Dancing for a Dollar’ is in the RTRFM Sound Selection for the week starting March 4th, 2024, and included in the WA Music Fresh Picks Playlist.
