ENCODER Sound is an audio mastering studio located in Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia. It is owned and operated by Mastering Engineer Dan O’Connor who has traversed the music industry over the past 11 years as an artist, trumpet player, record label operator, researcher, and audio professional.

Finding the record-making process the most alluring aspect of the industry and the experience of listening to well crafted musical recordings to be the epitome of experience, Dan continues his musical journey as a mastering engineer in search of challenging, beautiful music. Having run DIY-style, underground studios since 2014 for close collaborators and solo projects, ENCODER Sound carves out a dedicated mastering space to serve the alternative, indie and exploratory musicians of Australia.

Dan holds a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and has researched at the Doctorate level at The University of Western Australia (UWA), his research focused on practise processes for improvised music making.

Dan is a co-founding member of Tone List, a record label for exploratory music based in Boorloo/Perth. Alongside mastering duty, Dan remains an active performer in the Australian experimental music scene with ensembles Lakes, orphans, OVERLAY, Windhover, and playing the occasional solo set.
