DEHNOE + L0k + Peter Panspermia — Blue Diesel

The long awaited Lunch Records collaboration between Peter Panspermia, L0k and DEHNOE is out now in full.

This is a record full of twisted layers cascading over one another, eventually converging to a dense, detailed, yet expansive work. Holding everything together is a foregrounding of texture and groove throughout as well as the humorous, honest, and not precious nature of certain elements in the tunes. The fun and energy that it is evident in all these producers’ solo work is amplified by the collaboration.

Odlaw — Friends Lose Friends

Out now on Blue Grey Pink is the latest from Odlaw, ‘Friends Lose Friends.’

This one’s a moving work that I find impossible to listen through without a tear in the eye. It’s beautifully poignant, resonating on a very human feeling of loss that patiently evolves into an uplifting call for connection. The carefully crafted, simple language and sympathetic arrangement allow the listener to incorporate their own experience in the listening, making for a very real emotional reaction.

DEHNOE + L0k + Peter Panspermia — BLOOM and Prepare for Flight

A pair of singles from the upcoming Blue Diesel record, a collab between Peter Panspermia, L0k and DEHNOE, out on the Lunch Records label.

Vocals drive both these tunes, a kind of raw, off the cuff performance style float amidst crunchy guitars on ‘BLOOM.’ On ‘Prepare for Flight’ guitars giveaway to processed drums and a smoother, highly processed vocal. The way this collective of producers force together a vastness of influence is really fun and free wheeling.

Alice Humphries — One Thing at a Time

Alice Humphries’ latest composition One Thing at a Time for solo cello is out now.

Humphries composition foregrounds the cello’s flair for drama and texture and is a masterclass in momentum, balancing the push and pull between listener expectation and reaction. My favourite moments are those of simple melody texturally embellished or varied through bow, or other, techniques. The five movements exquisitely performed by Blair Harris in Melba Hall (Melbourne Conservatory of Music) and expertly captured by David Wilkinson.

My role in this one was sonically minimal, with nothing but some gain applied at the mastering stage and final quality control listening and checks. All the heavy lifting by:

No Nomad — Fool Territory

‘Fool Territory’ from No Nomad’s upcoming Handstand LP is out now on Rockton Records.

On these latest recordings No Nomad adopted a DIY approach to the sessions, hunkering down in a South West Australian cabin and recording themselves. The first single, ‘Fool Territory,’ seems a song in two distinct halves, one spacious and open, the other more pointed and insistent. By the end of the tune the bands compositional strength and generally deep pocket convinces the listener that these two parts were indeed meant to be together. The melody and vocal performance in the chorus is particularly a highlight!

‘Fool Territory’ is in the RTRFm Sound Selection for the week starting August 5th, 2024.

Pre-order the Handstand vinyl over at Bandcamp.
