Strakerbarlow — Push Against the Sun

Strakerbarlow’s Push Against the Sun debut single is out now. The tune features floating melodies, excellent guitar playing, a solid groove, and a gradual build that worms it's way into your ears.

Corella Saxophone Quartet — Kinjarling

The debut album from Boorloo/Perth-based Corella Saxophone Quartet is a melodic and meditative exploration of place, featuring all new works commissioned by the ensemble for this project. Composers Ellie Cummings, Glyn MacDonald, Billie Court, Hanae Wilding, Kieran Toye and Erin Royer were asked to draw on their experience of Western Australia in creating these pieces. The result is music undulating in tempo and dynamic whilst remaining relaxed and sensitive throughout, ideal for long listening. The Quartet perform these new works exquisitely.

Corella Saxophone Quartet is:
Bridget Cleary – soprano saxophone
Mia Vuković – alto saxophone
Kieran Toye – tenor saxophone
Erin Royer – baritone saxophone

The Drowners — Biting Nails

The Drowners reveal their first single of 2023 with Biting Nails. Taking a strong British alt influence of bands like Placebo and Suede. A dark and clear vocal performance is backed by uptempo, crisp drumming, gritty guitars, and even grittier synths.

Biting Nails makes the RTRFM Sound Selection for the week starting July 3rd, 2023.

L0K — a Place to Call Home

L0K presents their debut solo record A Place to Call Home, out today. I’d describe this as hyper detailed, lo-fi music, featuring intricate textural layers adorned with completely listenable melodies.

The record finds a rarely heard balance between attention to detail, an embrace of the organic flow of music, and a pop/mainstream sensibility. There is a sense of real artistic depth, with all eleven songs describing an aspect of an intricately recorded and produced world.

Web Rumors — Disciple 2

Web Rumors hits hard yet again with Disciple 2, the followup EP to 2022's Disciple. Leaning into an 80s, cold-wave aesthetic that has been Web Rumors’ focus for the past 18 months these four tracks really hold you in perpetual groove.

I really enjoy the craft and intent behind this music. It has the feeling that decision about tempo and form are informed by feel and a deep knowledge of a network of genres, and the execution is top shelf.

The track ‘De Bas En Haut’ gets listed in the RTRFm Sound Selection for the week starting May 15th, and the lead single ‘Ego Technician’ hit that same list ‘round May 1st.
